About The Wessex Violin Co.
The Wessex Violin Co. is a new start up workshop based in the West of England. Its professional, experienced Luthiers produce hand-made violins, violas and cellos of outstanding quality.
The Wessex Violin Co’s aim is to resurrect the heritage of English violin making. This unique workshop offers a handmade, modern interpretation of the English school of violin making. These instruments are ideal for young musicians going to university or conservatoire and professional players looking for a second instrument. The instruments are made to the highest standards using Balkan maple and Bavarian Spruce. They are finished with a traditional chestnut-brown oil based varnish that recreates the look of renowned makers Kennedy and Hill. Each instrument is individually numbered and carries a Certificate of Authenticity.
Violin & Cello Models
The first batch of instruments was finished in late summer 2011. Since then, things have moved on considerably. The making technique has been refined and the violin model settled on. In 2012, the cello was introduced and these have now been well received. Also in 2012, a new V Series violin model was introduced as the entry level instrument.
Wessex Viola and M Series Violin
In 2013, the workshop started production of the first Wessex Viola, based on a Stradivari pattern. It also introduced a new top level violin, The Wessex ‘M’ Series, made in an almost individual basis. The M Series violin is based on a beautiful Stradivari pattern. It features a typically English flourish to the scrolls and ‘f’ holes and is finished off with an elegant ebony crown.
Workshop violin making is truly back in Britain.
